T’is the season of award shows and something dawned upon me, why do we care about them and should we? I’ve never been one to believe things just because a higher community does. Maybe I’m being ignorant, but maybe I’m not.
Here’s some support for my theory:
- Leonardo DiCaprio: One of the best actors of all time, not many people can and should argue. His films include Wolf Of Wall Street, Shutter Island, Blood Diamond, The Departed, The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can, Gangs Of New York, Titanic, and The Basketball Diaries. Mr. DiCaprio has NEVER won an Oscar. (though Jennifer Hudson has)
2. Tupac Shakur: One of the most influential artists in his genre who rose to fame by painting the life of struggle. Tupac captivated the world by his inspirational lyrics and Kevin Garnett-like passion. He brought us classics like “Keep Ya Head Up” and “Dear Mama.” Mr. Shakur NEVER won a Grammy. (though Skrillex has)
- Mahatma Gandhi: The most powerful pacifist to ever live. After years of violent imperialism, Gandhi managed to drive out British rule through nonviolence. You can’t think of peace without thinking of this legend. Mr. Gandhi NEVER won the Nobel Peace Prize. (though Barack Obama has)
So next time you’re disappointed your favorite actor, artist, or inspirational figure fails to receive a well-deserved award, don’t be.
Notable mentions: Charles Chaplin, Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Wallace, Jermaine Cole, Liu Xiaobo, and Pope Francis aka His Humbleness.
